American Idol winner performs in Jackson

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - An American idol winner was in Jackson Saturday night.

Ruben Studdard performed at Tougaloo College as part of a national campaign called "Be Sickle Smart."

It's aimed at creating awareness about sickle cell disease.

The campaign intends to educate those living with the disease about the dangers of iron overload from blood transfusions.

Experts said the condition often goes unrecognized until it's already caused serious damage.

The event included talks from health professionals and free on-site iron overload screenings.

"I hope that people are able to get what they need and live a healthier and more productive and as pain-free as possible lifestyle," said Studdard.

According to campaign, over 70,000 people in the U.S. are living with sickle cell disease.
