JACKSON, MS (WLBT)  - You can make a difference in the life of a child this holiday season.

A program that helps make sure needy children receive a Christmas gift kicked off it's donation drive Thursday.

Starting today, you can donate new toys for kids ages zero to 17 through the Toys for Tots program.

There are a host of drop-off locations around the metro area, including Babies R US off of Lakeland Drive in Flowood and Toys R US on County Line Road.

The program is a partnership between the Salvation Army and the U.S. Marine Corps.

The Salvation Army runs the general program, while the Marines run the city of Jackson's program.

Organizers expect a 70 percent increase in the amount of kids participating in this year's program.

"The greater Jackson area, just like everywhere else in America, is experiencing an economic downturn, so what that means is a lot of kids won't have Christmas or toys under the tree this year," said Staff Sergeant Kendrick Crockett, assistant director of the Marine-run program.

If your family is in need, there's still time to register for the city of Jackson's program.

You can do so at the Jackson Medical Mall November 7th from 9am-5pm. Or on November 8th from 1pm-5pm.

To register, bring a government-issued photo ID. Parents or gaurdians are required to bring their own social security card, as well as one for each child. You must also bring a birth certificate for each child, as well as proof of insurance and residence.
