LAUREL, MS (AP) - A Laurel police officer is recovering from gunshot wounds after being shot while attempting to apprehend an escaped fugitive.
Police Capt. Tommy Cox says officer Kim Stewart was hospitalized Wednesday at South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel. Cox says the wound was not life threatening. He declined comment on Stewart's condition.
Cox says 17-year-old Ira Hadley Jr., who had escaped from Jones County Adult Detention Facility in October, was in custody. He said charges were pending while the investigation continued.
Police say Stewart had gone to a Laurel home on Tuesday after a receiving a tip that Hadley might be hiding there. The shooting occurred as Stewart and other officers searched the house. Cox says Hadley was arrested at the scene.
Hadley was originally jailed in July for armed robbery.
