ITAWAMBA COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - A lesbian teenager in North Mississippi who challenged her school district's ban of same-sex prom dates is now suing.
18-year-old Constance McMillen is seeking monetary damages for the public humiliation she suffered.
The American Civil Liberties Union filed the lawsuit in the U.S. District Court.
The suit named the Itawamba County School District and school officials as defendants.
McMillen challenged a rule that bans same-sex prom dates and a stipulation that only male students wear tuxedos.
In response, the school district canceled its April prom and announced parents would sponsor another dance.
