RIPLEY, MS (WMC-TV) - Tippah County sheriff's deputy DeWayne Crenshaw was killed in the line of duty Friday.

About 4:00 a.m. Friday morning, 62-year-old Crenshaw and a partner were dispatched to a house on County Road 500 for a disturbance call.  When they arrived, they tried to arrest Franklin Fitzpatrick.

"During the course of trying to affect and arrest, deputy Crenshaw was fatally wounded," said Jason Willis with the Tippah County Sheriff's Department.

Investigators said Fitzpatrick shot and killed Crenshaw.  Fitzpatrick was arrested and charged with capital murder.

Fitzpatrick is from Pontotoc, Mississippi.  Investigators would not say why he was at the house in Ripley or what the disturbance was about.

"We're just trying to put the pieces together as best we can," said Willis.

Crenshaw was a Vietnam veteran, a husband and father of two grown children.

Donations to the "Deputy DeWayne Crenshaw Memorial Fund" can be made at any Regions Bank. You can also help the deputy's family by texting "COPS CRENSHAW" to 85944.  A $10 donation will be added to your cell phone bill.
