JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - The search continued Tuesday evening for the gunman who opened fire killing a man around two o'clock on Culbertson Avenue in west Jackson.

Officers said the suspect fled the scene in a gray Chevy Suburban.

That vehicle was abandoned on Nimitz Street, where police said the killer carjacked a Federal Express truck and used it as a getaway vehicle.

The manhunt is underway for 32 year old Charles Johnson.

Arrest warrants have been issued by Jackson police for the Clinton man for murder and armed carjacking.

Law officers believe Johnson fatally shot 22 year old Eugene Roberts Tuesday afternoon.

Roberts' bullet riddle body was found in the passenger side of a red Grand Prix parked in the driveway of a duplex at 251 Culbertson Avenue.

"It appears that the perpetrators must have opened the door or the door must have already been open," said J.P.D. Assistant Chief Lee Vance. "We haven't found any broken glass on the car although the victim was shot multiple times."

According to investigators, Johnson fled the murder scene in a gray Chevrolet Suburban which was abandoned about a mile away on Nimitz Street.

It's there police said he apprehended a Federal Express delivery truck, not injuring the driver.

That truck was found hours later on Dawson Street in Clinton.

As news of the homicide spread family and friends gathered and waited anxiously.

Neighbors said Roberts, who previously lived on Culbertson, now lived one block over on Myer Avenue.

"I heard shots earlier, but you hear shots around here all the time," said Sandra Tims, who lives a few houses down from the crime scene on Culbertson Avenue.

The 22 year old also knew Roberts.

"He's a friend of my family. He and my sister knew each other really well. It's shocking to everybody because it goes on around us every day and for it to be so close to home and nobody knows anything about it, it just makes you wonder," said Tims.

It's also a question for police who have not released a motive and have not said what connected the two men.

Roberts, known to friends as "Boosie", reportedly worked off shore and was seen walking in the neighborhood earlier in the day.

"You hear shots all the time out here, and you never think anything of it. Especially that it would be anybody that you know," added Tims.

If you know where Charles Johnson is contact the Jackson Police Department at 601-960-1234 or Crimestoppers at 601-355-TIPS.
