CORINTH, Miss. (AP) - The city of Corinth has adopted new rules for permits and practices at the city-owned Forrest Hill Cemetery. The permit fee to open a grave at the cemetery is increasing from $100 to $350. Officials say the price to purchase a plot is still low compared to that of other cemeteries and cemetery income has not increased for a number of years.
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The Mississippi Supreme Court has granted a motion from St. Dominic Health Systems to dismiss its appeal of a judge's order that it did not have a binding contract to buy an outpatient surgery clinic in Canton. St. Dominic had argued that a Madison County judge acted hastily in ruling that its letter of intent did not obligate Madison Ambulatory Surgery Center to be bought by the hospital.
OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - A federal judge has set a July 15 sentencing for a former Mississippi state trooper who pleaded guilty to stomping a woman in the Lee County Jail more than five years ago. Christopher Gary Hughes admitted during his change of plea hearing in February that he deprived the woman of her constitutional rights to protection from unreasonable force and search and seizure.
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Tougaloo College is starting an 18-month commemoration of the civil rights movement, 50 years after it helped reshape the American political and social landscape. The first event is a gala Saturday night at the Jackson Convention Complex, honoring four people who founded organizations designed to help the poor or disenfranchised.
