The Department of Environmental Quality is issuing an advisory to avoid contact with the Pearl River between I-20 and Byram.
That's because of this geyser of raw sewage spewing from a 7-foot pipe south of I-20 near Lynch Street.
Deputy Public Works Director David Willis says inspectors, called to the scene after watching WLBT, found the top of the pipe had deteriorated, opening up a 4-inch hole.
Fifty percent of Jackson's sewage and 100% of sewage from Madison and Ridgeland flows through this pipe.
Willis says the city has contacted three local contractors to repair the damage. The flow has been increased to the main water treatment plant, where a 9-inch sewer pipe is being repaired, to hopefully slow down the spillage into the Pearl River.
