Local churches fight against child poverty

Posted: Updated:
Jackson, MS (WLBT) - Giving hope to Mississippi children was the purpose of the Children's Sabbath Festival held Saturday at the state capitol.

Dozens gathered on the south lawn for free food and games.  Ballet Magnificant performers also entertained the crowd.  Leaders with Congregations For Children and the Children's Defense Fund planned the event.  They believe many children suffer from poverty and inequality and it needs to end here in Mississippi.

"It's a weekend for communities of faith to come together to renew their commitment for justice for children.  I say what Jesus said, what you have done for the least of these you've done to me," said Latisha Latiker of the Children's Defense Fund Southern Region.

Educational materials and resources were made available for parents at the event.
