BREAKING: Fallen JPD officer identified as Glen Agee
RAYMOND, MS (WLBT) - The Jackson Police Officer killed during an apparent scuffle with a domestic violence suspect Friday night has been identified as 31 year old Glen Agee. A preliminary investigation suggests that Officer Agee's service weapon may have fired during the scuffle, fatally wounding him with two gunshots to the face.
JPD Assistant Chief Lee Vance says the department is heavy-hearted this weekend as the details are sorted out.
Around 9:15 p.m. Friday, Officer Agee and another unidentified male officer were called to the 2000 block of Will-O-Wisp Way. They arrested 24 year old LeTwan Smith for domestic violence and pointing and aiming. While being transported to the Hinds County Detention Center, Smith managed to escape the back of the police cruiser near the Sonic restaurant on Highway 18 in Raymond. Chief Vance says Smith requested to have a window rolled down for air, and when the officers did so, Smith reached outside the window and opened the car door.
Chief Vance said Smith fled toward a wooded area. Officer Agee chased him on foot, while the other officer circled the area in the cruiser. It's believed Officer Agee caught up with Smith before the suspect entered the woods, and an altercation ensued next to a canal. At that time, police believe Officer Agee's service weapon discharged. Smith was caught a short time later. His handcuffs were in front of him. Chief Vance says at some point, the suspect probably pulled his legs through his handcuffs to get them from the back to the front.
Officer Agee was airlifted to U.M.C. and died shortly after arrival. The second officer was unharmed.
Smith's weapon had been removed by the officers prior to his initial arrest, and that weapon remained in the patrol car.
The investigation is ongoing.
Friday night, a team of Jackson and Hinds County officials gathered at U.M.C. as they awaited word on Agee's condition. "It just goes to show you there's nothing routine about this job and the officers put their lives on the line each and every day. It's just a tragic loss for our department," said Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson.
