McMillin says he couldn't support Melton's reelection bid

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - In response, the former head of the Jackson Police Department, Sheriff Malcolm McMillin, said the decision to step down was his entirely.

But as a shocking sidebar, the sheriff said his longtime friend, Frank Melton is not the man he would choose for mayor of this city.

In his letter today to the mayor, Sheriff McMillin thanked Melton for his 19 months as police chief. But in the last paragraph he says he cannot support Melton in good conscience in his re-election bid for mayor of Jackson.

The sheriff says Jackson needs new leadership.

I didn't want Frank to run again; one because of his health and the other is the disruption that it's caused the community over the past four years. It's time for new leadership and a new direction" says McMillin.

Despite the sheriff saying it was his decision to step down as Jackson's police chief, the last sentence in his letter to the mayor says, "If you wish me to resign, on your request, I will tender my resignation."

So he did today.

Sheriff McMillin refused to say if he was supporting another mayoral candidate.
