Mayoral candidate calls poll bogus

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - New poll results on the Jackson mayor's race are being called bogus by one candidate.

Robert Johnson says the poll's only intent is to suppress voter turnout and sway the election. The former Jackson police chief and former state corrections commissioner is asking the media to stop reporting Zata 3 poll results.

Last week Zata 3, a consulting firm, released its recent survey numbers, showing incumbent mayor Frank Melton in the lead with 27 percent of the voters' support. The survey was conducted by randomly calling more than 500 Jackson households.

Johnson complains participants were given the names of only 6 of the 11 Democratic candidates. His name was not among them.

Brad Chism, whose firm conducted the poll, says the results of other surveys, in part, determined which candidates' names were listed.

Chism says had more people said they support a candidate other than those listed, he would have considered altering the poll.

He adds that his firm was not paid to do the survey and has no client in the race.
