Animal control officers release disturbing photos

PEARL, MS (WLBT) - "Like a horror movie."  That's how a Pearl animal control officer describes the inside of the house occupied by Gerald and Paula Keyes, the couple arrested this month on animal cruelty and child neglect charges.

Wednesday, they released still pictures of the home's interior and we warn you some of the images may be disturbing.

This is what officer Heather Rogers and others saw when they entered the house on 2229 Upper drive: feces covered animal crates, piles of animal waste, a refrigerator full of medical supplies used to treat animals as well as surgical equipment, baby bottles surrounded by filth and much, much more.

Rogers worked for the Mississippi Animal Rescue League for nine years before she joined Pearl animal control a year ago. She says, "Each time you go into a house like this, you think it's the worst. This is the worst I've ever seen."

Tony White, the Keyes' neighbor, told us, " He told me he'd spay and neuter animals and of course, you know, he had offered to work on mine but I declined."

White says he was told Keyes' father was a veterinarian, but there is no license on record for Gerald Keyes. The Keyes remain in jail and a 3-year-old boy in the home is in DHS custody.

Rogers says, of the 31 animals confiscated from the home, only two dogs and one cat survived. The others had to be euthanized because of poor health. The city has ordered the Keyes clean up the property within 30-days.
