Crisler advances to runoff

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Ward six Councilman Marshand Crisler will face former Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson in a runoff for the city's top position.

Crisler was surrounded by a throng of supporters at his campaign headquarters, declaring victory in his advancement to the runoff, but also asking everyone to pray for Mayor Melton who was hospitalized earlier.

Crisler said he was humbled by the support of Jackson voters, and their confidence in his ability to lead the city. He say's he wants to change the image of the Mayors office, and the entire city, with positive change.

"Even though the field of candidates has changed, my values, my guiding principles won't change. My commitment to this city won't change. My plans for the future of Jackson won't change, but this campaign will be about change," said Crisler during his speech.

Several city leaders including ward one Councilman Jeff Weill were there to congratulate Crisler, who say he has the votes and support, proving he's the candidate to beat in the runoff.

"He's got great judgement he's worked well with everyone on the council he's worked particularly hard with me and he gives us the new blood we need in the Mayors office," said Weill.

Former Director of Economic Development for the city, Nina Holbrook said, "He's young he's energetic he loves the city of Jackson and he's honest and I think he'll make a great Mayor he has a lot of people behind him."

Crisler ended the night shaking hands and talking to reporters saying, "I have the experience to lead on day one, and lead Jackson in a new direction and a better direction. I think from now on we need to talk in terms of going forward I think any step backwards is failure for Jackson. Success is going to be built on teamwork."
