JACKSON, MS (WLBT)- Karen Irby, the wife of a prominent Jackson businessman, has been indicted by a Hinds County grand jury.
Sources tell WLBT news the counts against her include two counts of depraved heart murder and one count of aggravated assault in a February 11th wreck that killed two doctors. Hinds County Circuit Court officials confirmed the indictment Friday. The victims killed in that wreck were a recently engaged couple, Dr. Mark Pogue, and Dr. Lisa Dedousis.
Under Mississippi law, depraved heart murder carries a sentence up to life in prison.
Police say a late model Mercedes driven by Karen Irby slammed head-on into the truck carrying Pogue and Dedousis. They were pronounced dead at the scene.
Irby's husband, Stuart Irby, was a passenger in her car. Both Irbys survived, but required extensive medical care. The aggravated assault charge filed against Karen Irby is related to her husband's injuries.
Hinds County Circuit Judge Tomie Green will hear the case against Irby.
