Minutes after turning herself in, Karen Irby out on bond

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - The driver involved in that deadly wreck on Old Canton Road a few months ago has turned herself in to authorities and now is out on bond. Led by a Hinds County Sheriff's patrol car, Karen Irby arrived in a black SUV at the Hinds County Detention Center in Raymond just after 3:30 this afternoon.

Within 30 minutes Karen Irby was released on $250,000 bond. She is charged with two counts of depraved heart murder and one count of aggravated assault.

On the night of February 11th Karen Irby was driving a black Mercedes when it slammed head-on into a truck carrying two doctors. Dr. Mark Pogue, and his fiancee, Dr. Lisa Dedousis were pronounced dead at the scene.  Irby's husband, Stuart Irby, was a passenger in the Mercedes. They both survived but required extensive medical care. The aggravated assault charge filed against Karen Irby is related to her husband's injuries.

Authorities say she had been drinking before that accident. While Karen Irby was turning herself in Monday, a longtime friend and attorney for the Irby family held a press conference. He says she has retained attorney Joe Hollomon to represent her on the charges.

"As they should be the facts will be presented in court, which is the proper venue to determine whether or not this tragic accident was the result of any negligent act on the part of Karen Irby," said Calvin Wells, Irby family friend and attorney.

Irby is entering a not guilty plea and has waived her arraignment.
