Nationwide Boom in Construction True for Tri-County Area

Good news in a tough economy. There's a spike in new housing construction nationwide.   And the tri-county area is no exception.

The Mississippi Home Builders Association says construction of new homes was up 40 percent between April and July. Still, construction in the area is nowhere near it's 2006 peak. But builders say the construction spike is boosting their confidence in the market.

"What we've seen lately is a spike and a jump in interest as far as home owners are concerned," said Scott Shoemaker with Shoemaker Homes. "Which has consequently led to more permits and more houses under construction."

One builder believes the construction spike is fueled in part by the tax credit for first-time home buyers.

That incentive runs through the end of November.
