Executive Director of the Ark arrested

Shortly after 6 p.m., John Robison the Executive Director of the Ark arrived at the Madison Police Department with his attorney Tom Royals to turn himself in.

"There are two sides to this now. And its not what people think it is. It's a question of something veterinarians recommended and you're gonna see all of this blow away."

Royals and Robison were inside the police station for about 45 minutes. Royals says his client faces several charges.

"Can you tell us how you feel about this, being charged with animal cruelty? You can't talk?"

"No comment. I can't talk about it,"

"Three counts all having to do with taking a cat or cats that had a communicable disease to a vet to have them euthanised."

Royals says a private citizen has filed the charges and is accusing Robison of taking a kitten and having it euthanised. Royals says the kitten suffered from flip, feline infectious peritonitis. A rare , contagious and fatal disease.

"And in the opinion of the specialist and the veterinarians some of these cats had this communicable disease and the recommendation was euthanasia from the veterinarians. That's what this is all about."

"The Ark is controlled by the city of Madison. I talked with Mayor Mary Hawkins-Butler by phone. She said she could not give specifics in this case. She did tell me the charges against the executive director were not brought by the city. She also says something that was meant to be so good, went so wrong. And she added the volunteers who work here are wonderful and didn't know what was going on."

"It's just ironic that something like this would visit him. A champion for animals. Yes."

Robison posted a $1,000 bond and was released.
