Mississippi SAT scores higher than national average

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi students who took this year's SAT scored higher than the national average in all three categories of the college entrance exam.

There were 996 test-takers in Mississippi, and 1.5 million nationwide.

Most college-bound Mississippi students take the American College Test, which is required by state universities.

The highest score is 800 in the three SAT sections: critical reading, mathematics and writing.

In Mississippi, the average score was 567 in critical reading, which was above the national average of 501.

In mathematics, the state score was 554 and the national was 515.

The state's writing score was 559. The national writing score was 493.

Sixty-five percent of the state students who took the test were white. Eighteen percent were black.
