SHARKEY COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - A mother and small child have been found murdered in Sharkey County.

More than 150 people gathered near the house on busy Highway 61, in Cary, looking for answers in the murder of a 31 year old woman and her three year old daughter.

The Sharkey county coroner says the murder is shocking for the small town.

"At this time I'm not able to get to the child to see what injuries there are because I don't want to .. (disturb the crime scene) But the mother has multiple stab wounds. They're both in the bedroom. She's in the bed. The mother, she's on the floor," said Coroner Angela Eason.

Officials would not release the names of the victims, but friends say the woman is Karitha Carroll, a cook at the Double Quick convenience store in Rolling Fork.

The child's name is Jamia.

"We were friends and me and her baby were real close. They say they had cut both the baby and the mother's throats," said friend Donna Johnson who waited late into the evening with family members.

"They found Karitha and her daughter might as well say slaughtered. Somebody's got to do something about people killing people and thinking they can get away with it," said long time friend Angela Brown.

"It's sad. It really is. Why would someone do a baby or her like that? That's pitiful. That's sad," said Latricia Rawls, a friend who rode with Johnson from Vicksburg to find out what happened to their slain friend.

According to friends the victims bodies were found when Carroll did not show up for work and someone was sent to check on her.

Family, friends and residents remained at the scene as storms passed overhead hoping to find out what happened.

Friends say she leaves behind two other children a boy and a girl.

"She was sweet girl. She didn't bother nobody. She was a sweet girl. She treated everybody nice and she had cute little old baby," said friend Ollie Willis.

Authorities awaited a blood splatter forensic team from the gulf coast to assist with the investigation.

So far no word on suspects or any arrests.

Sharkey County Sheriff Lindsey Adams would not comment on the investigation.

These are the first homicides of the year in the county.
