JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - The man accused of murdering a Brandon football player back in 2001, will spend the rest of his life in prison.
Thursday afternoon, a Hinds county jury returned a guilty verdict in the Derrick Bailey murder trial. Bailey was sentenced to life for the murder of 16-Year-Old Ryan Evans. It took jurors just over an hour to reach their verdict.
Evans was shot outside the Short Stop convenience store in Jackson.
Bailey was later convicted on murder charges. That was overturned by an appeals court judge, because taped testimony not in evidence was given to jurors in the first trial.
The Evans family is hoping this trial, finally puts the tragedy of Ryan's death behind them.
"It's not really closure because i'll never have my son back, it's like another chapter closed and now this man has the right to appeal so as much I'll'll like for it to be over, we could be looking at this again in another few years, does it ever really end?," said Donna Evans, Ryans Mom as she left the courthouse.
Derrick Bailey did not take the stand in this trial.
