Scores of Jackson kids enjoy "fun with Santa"

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - About 1,000 children ventured out to the Jackson Medical Mall Saturday to play games and win prizes, under the watchful eye of Santa Claus!

Children lined up to get their pictures taken with the bearded fella at the "Fun with Santa" event, put on by the Jack and Jill Clubs of Central Mississippi.

Children were treated to scores of games and treats.  Jermicheal Howard says he enjoyed getting a tattoo of Christmas candles "Just because I like getting tattoos," he says.  "My second favorite thing is the Jackson Public Schools thing where we get school supplies."

They all walked away with goodie bags, and one table provided a free book for each child to take home.  "It's always good to have books.  Reading is important," says Evelyn Johnson, a Jack and Jill member who helped give away the books.

Parents have a good time too.

"It's fun, exciting for the kids, something they enjoy," says mom Sandra Holmes.

"When you look in (the children's) eyes, see the joy, see how they're excited about seeing Santa, playing the games, it's fun for us.  It's enriching," says Stephanie Smith-Jefferson, President of the Mississippi Chapter.

The "Fun with Santa" event has been held for about 15 years.
