Home fires common in winter

Posted: Updated:

The Jackson Fire Department says this is the worst time of year for fires.

Mississippi ranks first in the nation in the number of deaths from fires. Fire department officials say as the outside temperature drops people tend stay indoors to keep warm and usually want to turn up the heat. Wanting that increased heat is what can increase the risk of home heating fires.

Half of all home fires happen in the winter months. So far, five people have died this year from fires in Jackson.

Here are some reminders from the Jackson Fire Department:

-First , give space heaters space. Keep anything that can easily burn at least three feet away.

-Turn off portable heaters when you go to bed or even when you leave a room.

-Replace any broken plugs or loose connections you find with any wiring.

-And finally, install and check smoke alarms regularly.
