FOREST ACRES, SC (NBC) - Police in Forest Acres, South Carolina hope surveillance footage from an assault at Walmart will help bring a suspect to justice.
The victim had decided to get a jump on the holiday crowds by shopping a little early on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, but little did he know, he was about to get jumped himself.
"Basically a suspect has gone inside and watched a customer inside shopping, noticed he was alone and tried to take advantage of the situation," said Brick Lewis with the Columbia Police Department. Lewis says the surveillance camera in the lawn and garden area caught the attempted robbery on tape.
"He took an opportunity, an opportune time, he noticed the victim was by himself. I think that is the only reason it did happen," said Lewis.
The tape continues to roll as the victim defends himself. The suspect attempts to steal the shopper's wallet several times.
"The victim was trying to defend himself. Obviously we want the victim to be wary of that kind of thing, we want them to be cautious because you don't know what the criminal may have on them," said Lewis.
The suspect had no weapon on him, but he did have the sense to give up once the sliding doors opened and the victim called for help. The suspect ran away and left the shopper bruised. Watching the video, Lewis has some tips for shoppers this holiday season.
"You need to be on your toes, so to speak," said Lewis. "We encourage all citizens to be aware of your surroundings especially during shopping time, travel in groups, park in well-lit areas and if not be aware of your surroundings."
