JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - The jolly old elf spread holiday cheer at the Mississippi State Hospital in Whitfield Tuesday.

25 santas visited patients on campus, singing Christmas songs and delivering over 1,000 gift bags.

Most of the gifts for residents were donated to the hospital. They included personal items like clothing, fruits, and candy.

The long-running program has become a meaningful event for patients on campus.

"They love it. They absolutely love it," said one of the santas. "We've had grown women cry when I give them a present."

"We want the Christmas season to be special and memorable to everyone who's here in the state hospital at Christmastime," said Bo Chastain, director of the state hospital. "And so all of these people coming out and supporting the Santa Day event makes that possible. We couldn't do it without."

"Santa Day" marks the end of the state hospital's Christmas activities, which included a record number of holiday parties- over 130.
