JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Fire officials are investigating what may have sparked the blaze that destroyed a South Jackson home overnight.

It happened around 3 o'clock Wednesday morning in the 2600 block of Pine Tree Drive, off McDowell Road.

Officials knocked out the blaze, but the home is a total loss. The house is vacant, but neighbors said a man sometimes sleeps inside.

No one was inside when officials arrived on scene, and no one was injured.

Authorities said there have been a number of recent fires in vacant homes in the area. They believe they may be caused by the homeless trying to keep warm.

Centearia Harvey lives next door to the vacant home that caught fire. She said she woke to a loud sound.

"All of a sudden we just heard, 'pow, pow!' And I kind of just laid there for a minute. And then I peeked outside the window and the house was blazed up," said Harvey. "Actually the side of my house burned a little bit and the blinds and stuff got melted so I just tried to get my children out of the house as quick as possible."

Harvey and her four children fled to a nearby relative's home as a precaution.

She said she wants to move because of the number of recent fires in the area.
