RANKIN COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - Officials are investigating the daycare bus wreck that sent five children and one adult to the hospital Tuesday morning.

The accident happened on Highway 49 South near Piney Woods, just South of Florence.

More than two dozen pre-school aged children from Stepping Stones Christian Learning Center in Florence were on their way to the movies when the crash occurred.

Daycare officials said a vehicle stopped suddenly in front of them. That's when a day care van slammed into the day care bus in front of it. No one was seriously injured, but five children were treated for minor injuries at University Medical Center as a precaution.

"They held up like troopers. They weren't really freaking out, just a lot of crying and wanting their mommy," said Joanne Edmiston, head curriculum teacher at the learning center, and driver of the daycare van. "The [vehicle that stopped suddenly] didn't have no turn signals or nothing and immediately did a left-hand turn and the bus slammed on their brakes, and I slammed on mine."

"With that many children on two buses, it could have been tragic," said Sgt. James Walker, public relations officer for the Mississippi Highway Patrol. "The driver that caused the accident didn't even stop to check on them. It could have been really tragic."

Highway 49 South was down to one lane while officials cleaned up the wreck. All lanes have re-opened.
