LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - A Laurel police officer was shot and wounded Tuesday while attempting to apprehend a suspect who escaped from jail in October.

Investigator Kim Stewart was taken to South Central Regional Medical Center for treatment.

A spokesman for Mayor Melvin Mack said the Stewart was shot twice in his lower extremities and the wounds are not believed to be life threatening.

Officials said Stewart had gone to a house on West 17th Street Tuesday morning after a receiving a tip escaped inmate Ira Hadley might be there.

Hadley allegedly was hiding in the attic and shot the officer during a search of the house.

Hadley was apprehended at the scene and is currently in the Jones County Jail.

Hadley has been on the run since October 30 when he and Claude Johnson scaled a fence at the jail and escaped.

Johnson was caught two days later.
