Two club shootings usher in New Year

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Despite the declining homicide rates, Jackson Police are not getting a break when it comes to violent crimes. Just hours into the New Year, officers were already working two separate shooting cases.

At 3 a.m. shots rang out at Freelons Bar. That's on Grove and Mill Streets. A fight erupted inside and the people involved were escorted out. One of the men jumped in his car and started shooting as he left the parking lot. The only person hit was a bystander, Alonzo Martin. He suffered a gunshot to the buttocks.

About an hour later, 48 year-old Dennis Johnson was shot outside Chuckies Lounge on Ridgeway Street. Johnson says, he too, got caught in the crosshairs of someone else's fight. Two men were shooting at each other in the club's parking lot.

Johnson ducked behind a car and was hit in the leg. Police have made no arrests in either shooting.
