JACKSON, MS (WLBT) – A Jackson teenager was the capital city's first homicide victim of 2010, losing his life on New Years Day.

J.P.D. spokesman Officer Joseph Daughtry said gunfire erupted around 8:30 Friday evening striking 18 year old Marquies Thomas.

He was standing in the yard of 3382 Center Street when he was shot in the leg.

Investigators said Thomas and several others were gathered outside the home when suddenly gunshots were heard in the area.

The teenager screamed that he had been shot.

He was taken to University Medical Center where just over two hours later he died.

Police have arrested 19 year old Roberto Bracey of Jackson and charged him with murder.

Bracey is being held without bond at the Hinds County Detention Center.
