CANTON, MS (WLBT) - The city of Canton has fired its animal control officer after an investigation into claims that he shot and killed numerous dogs and cats.
Canton Police Chief Vickie McNeil confirmed that animal control officer Alonzo Esco had been fired Tuesday by the Canton Board of Alderman, based on her recommendation. She would only say that Esco had euthanized animals "by a process, not consistent with animal control laws." McNeil would not say how many animals were killed or how they died.
Esco had served as animal control officer for Canton and Madison County for the past three years.
