JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - The tire swing is Sam's favorite. To see his smiling face you would never know the challenges the five year old has faced since undergoing brain surgery two years ago.
"Since then we have found he has a damaged area to his brain so he has a lot of sensory issues the same as a child with autism," said Sam's mother Kaye Carr. She quickly discovered the lack of resources in Mississippi for children like Sam.
"I have a seven year old son too. We were looking at summer camp for him. I had a ton of options. Then I started looking for Sam and I had none," said Carr.
Until she found Hope Hollow Ministries. A sprawling 20 acre camp in Canton where children and young adults with disabilities can play and learn.
"We closed on the property a little over two years ago. Within two months we had our first day camps up and running," said Hope Hollow Executive Director Rebecca Phelps.
It is also a safe place for moms to lean on each other for support. "I needed other parents who understand the challenges and what you're going through on so many different levels," said Carr.
"I'm just thankful for it and hope we can continue to grow and expand it and provide even more services for a larger number of children," said Board of Directors Vice President Angela Chandler.
That's the goal. Hope Hollow plans to transform their second floor into a sensory gym, pave a sidewalk around the building for those using wheelchairs and soon offer an after school program.
"Our goal this Spring is to have after school activities for the children and one of those will include the therapeutic horseback riding," said Board of Directors President Donna Kaye Byrd.
You can support Hope Hollow Ministries by attending the Doors of Hope Gala on February 6th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Local artists have created brightly painted doors for the camp that will be revealed at the event. The artists participating are Wyatt Waters, Vicki Carroll, Vicki Armstrong, Roz Roy, Joy McAllister, Laurie Hamilton-Smith, Amanda Ray Foxx, Anthony Difatta, Erica Flannes, Lee Harper and Jacob Walters.
