State hires consultants to study school district mergers

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Governor Barbour spoke to legislators Monday afternoon about the need to consolidate school districts. It was the first meeting of the Commission on Mississippi Education.

The Governor says the goal of these meetings is for lawmaker's to figure out how to make schools better in Mississippi.

He outlined several reasons for school consolidation, but he says saving money with underperforming schools is a dire need in the state.

"It is very important to do it because we're wasting enormous amounts of money and in many cases we are keeping poorly performing school districts in business where the kids would be better off in a different district" said Governor Barbour.

The governor says he will release the first recommendation of what districts need to be consolidated by April first.
