Fire guts vacant restaurant overnight

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Jackson fire officials rushed to the scene of a vacant-restaurant fire that happened late Tuesday night. The fully engulfed blazed completely gutted the local eatery.

It happened around 11:30 p.m. at the America's Diner restaurant (formerly Perkins) on the I-55 Frontage Road near Briarwood Drive. Once fire officials arrived, they found smoke and flames shooting from the top of the building. They worked diligently to put out the blaze, but the majority of the building's infrastructure had been severely damaged.

"The fire has been brought under control at this time," said Chief Gregory Thomas Tuesday night. "The cause of it has not been determined yet. That's something we will do shortly after they finish putting out some hot spots we're working on right now."

No one was inside the restaurant at the time of the blaze. An investigation into the fire is ongoing.
