HINDS COUNTY, VICKSBURG (WLBT) - Storms brought heavy rain, lightning and high winds to central Mississippi late Wednesday into early Thursday morning.

In western Hinds county thunderstorms produced quarter to golf ball sized hail.

The intense system forced motorists on I-20 West to seek shelter beneath the nearest overpass.

Hail pounded vehicle roofs, while blinding rain made it difficult to see the roadway.

Tabitha Smith was one of the drivers caught in the hail storm while driving from Flora to her home in Bolton.

After 11 p.m. Wednesday Smith and other motorists sat under an overpass waiting for the hail storm to pass.

In Vicksburg, flash flooding prompted the evacuation of fire station number five on Highway 61 South near the Vicksburg Municipal Airport.

Water surrounded four buildings and large earth-moving equipment, literally creating a lake in the area.

There were also reports that the Vicksburg Police Department sustained minor flooding when water briefly collected at the entrance of the building.
