Dam breaks in east Jones County

LAUREL, Miss. (AP) - A dam on a private lake in east Jones County failed Thursday, releasing about 13 million gallons of water into an area of wetlands.

Local and state officials say there is no threat to residential areas. However, officials are inspecting another nearby dam that could be damaged by the water.

Don McKinnon, director of the Jones County Emergency Management Agency, says much of the water has flowed into Rolling Hills Ranch Lake about a mile away.

"Our concern is that this (Rolling Hills) lake's dam won't hold under the added pressure," McKinnon said. "But so far there have been no evacuations, no one has been hurt and no agricultural operations have been affected. It has affected wetlands primarily, so far."

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency was on the way to site.
