HATTIESBURG, MS (WLOX) - The summer of 2009 will be remembered by football fans as the saga of Brett Favre. Would he retire or would he sign with the Minnesota Vikings?

During the period of indecision, Favre worked out with the Oak Grove High School football team near his Hattiesburg home.

"He came in on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings and ran with the kids and threw passes to the players," Oak Grove Coach Neville Barr remembered.

Eventually Favre signed with the Vikings, and now he and his team mates are preparing to play in Sunday's NFC Championship Game against the New Orleans Saints. Coach Barr said he knew Brett would make a difference in Minnesota.

"He brings leadership. That was big for the Vikings."

Oak Grove Quarterback James McMahon lived a dream during the summer. Brett Favre, one of the greatest players in the history of the NFL, taught James a thing or two.

"We tried not to look at him as a superstar," McMahon said. "Now, looking back, it's something I'll never forget."

Here's where it gets tricky. Oak Grove High School is in the heart of Saints Country. But because of the special relationship between the football team and Brett Favre, the team and its coach will be cheering for the Vikings on Sunday.

"I've always been a Saints fan, but as long as Brett is playing, I'll be pulling for him," Coach Barr said.

A little bit of Brett Favre's magic must have rubbed off on the Oak Grove football team. The warriors won the 6-A South State Championship this year.
