JACKSON, MS (WLBT) – A Jackson councilman requested pay raises for public works employees after their efforts to restore service during the water crisis.
Ward Three Councilman Kenneth Stokes wanted to give the workers a $2.00 per hour wage increase.
That would add up to approximately $1.3 million dollars.
Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr. said he understood Stokes's sentiment. but the city simply can not afford the raises.
Johnson said there is a $1.6 million dollar decrease in first quarter sales taxes.
According to stokes, the money could come from the current $5 million budget fund balance.
The issue was placed in the budget committee.
