V'burg mayor's check garnishment delayed

JACKSON, MS (AP) - Hinds County Judge Houston Patton has delayed the garnishing of Vicksburg Mayor Paul Winfield's paycheck to settle a $3,557 debt owed to St. Dominic Hospital.

Patton acted Thursday to temporarily set aside an order he had issued earlier this month.

Winfield said the St. Dominic debt stemmed from his insurance company's refusal to pay charges he incurred after a visit to the hospital in 2006.

Patton says he will hold the garnishment order in abeyance until the status of the insurance could be determined.

The hospital sold the debt to a collection agency, which filed court action to try to collect the delinquent debt.

Winfield makes $81,034 as mayor. He also serves as Port Gibson's city attorney, for which he has said he's paid about $30,000 per year.
