PRENTISS, MS (WLBT) - State fire investigators believe unattended food on a stove led to the fire that killed a Jefferson Davis County man early Sunday.

According to State Chief Deputy Fire Marshal Ricky Davis, a 20 year old died in a home just outside the Prentiss city limits.

Firefighters were called 83 Mount Zion Lane around 4:30 a.m.

The victim's name has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

He was found on the sofa in the living room.

Investigators said it is a possible stove fire caused by cooking.

No smoke alarms were inside the residence.

Davis said the tragedy is a reminder of the necessity of properly working smoke detectors and heating appliances.
