JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - A Jackson State researcher is in fair condition Tuesday night after she was shot on campus last night in an apparent robbery attempt.
Andrea Michalkova Scott, 36, was shot twice shortly after 6 p.m. outside the John A. Peoples science building.
Her husband, Bill Scott, tells WLBT she was shot twice in the back of the head during the attack.
Andrea Scott was doing post-graduate work in Jackson State's chemistry department. She is a native of Slovakia and arrived in the U.S. in 2002.
Bill Scott says one bullet shattered her cheekbone, but she is still able to speak.
Scott told investigators she was approached by a man who demanded her money as she left the chemistry lab. After she gave him five dollars, the man demanded her purse. Scott was then beaten in the head with a gun, and shot twice.
She said the shooter was with two other men. All fled after the shooting. A good Samaritan found Andrea Scott and called police.
Students on Jackson State's campus say this latest incident has raised concerns about safety, especially at night.
Jackson state Interim Police Chief Tyrone Kidd told reporters the campus has beefed up police patrols in the area where the attack happened.
Andrea Scott described her attacker as a black male in his mid 20s. He was wearing a brown skull cap and a blue jacket. So far no arrests have been made in this case.
Jackson State police do offer an escort service for faculty leaving at night, but Scott did not use it.
