JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Governor Haley Barbour announced millions more in cuts from the state budget Friday. In this latest cut, Barbour sliced another $21 million. Added to the previous cuts the total comes to more than $458 million for the fiscal year. Most agencies in state government will now have to operate with nearly 8.7% less money.
"This is the fourth round of cuts that we've made this year. I made the cuts as quickly as I could because the department and agencies that have to actually cut their budgets, the sooner they know the easier it is or the less difficult it is for them to make the adjustments," said Governor Barbour.
Democratic State Representative Alyce Clarke of District 69 gave WLBT the following statement in response to the Governor's announcement, "I understand we are running short on funds. In my opinion, instead of cutting funds we need to come up with ways to generate income. If we can furlough people it is better than people losing their jobs. 80% of something is better than 100% of nothing."
