JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - 16 new Jatran buses were unveiled today in Jackson. The cost some 4.4 million dollars paid for with a matching federal grant. Mayor Harvey Johnson says the new buses are a much need addition to the city's aging fleet.
They are smaller and better equipped than the current buses. A key feature is easier access for handicapped riders. The door is in the center now.
Dr. Scott Crawford, hailed the purchases are a step forward for handicapped individuals. The Jatran public transportation system has been the subject of intense criticism and a federal lawsuit filed by advocates for disabled riders.
