CLINTON, MS (WLBT) - The two high school soccer players, involved in a fight Saturday in the 6A state championship soccer match between Northwest Rankin and Gulfport, have been suspended.

Gulfport's Zach Windom, who threw Northwest Rankin's Arlington Shirley to the ground and started punching him, has been suspended from all MHSAA activities for the rest of the school year.

Shirley has been suspended the next two MHSAA contests. Both will also be punished according to local school board policy.

The Mississippi High School Activities Association announced the actions Wednesday afternoon.

Windom and Shirley will also be required to take and successfully complete the remediation program of Star Sportsmanship, which is offered by the MHSAA office.

MHSAA Executive Director Ennis Proctor blamed the media for blowing the incident out of proportion.

"We regret that the media has blown this entire incident out of proportion through the use of a  limited portion of a single video shown in slow motion..." said Proctor.
