JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Mississippi senators voted Wednesday to reduce salaries of lawmakers by ten percent to help the state's budget crisis.
Bill 2506 passed 39-to-2 in the senate to cut salaries of representatives, senators, the speaker of the house and the lieutenant governor.
The bill is now headed to the Mississippi State House of Representatives.
If adopted, the salary reductions would go into effect January 1, 2011 for legislators.
The decrease would take effect July 1, 2010 for the lieutenant governor and speaker of the house.
The Mississippi Constitution prohibits a salary reduction for legislators during the current session.
