Barbour signs meth bill into law

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Gov. Haley Barbour has signed into law legislation that will require consumers to get a doctor's prescription to buy cold medicine containing pseudoephedrine, a decongestant and key ingredient in the illegal drug methamphetamine.

The law goes into effect July 1.

Barbour said officials are serious about reducing meth use in the state. Last year, there were 981 meth arrests and nearly 600 meth labs were seized.

Mississippi becomes only the second state to have such a law. Legislators have said soon after Oregon passed a similar law in 2006 there was a decrease in meth arrests.

The bill is House Bill 512.
