JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - The Fraud Division of the Department of Human Services or DHS is breaking some hearts this Valentine's Day season, all in the name of protecting your tax dollars.

Over the last several weeks DHS investigators have been confiscating large valentine's treats from stores around the state.

The baskets were being sold to people using EBT snap benefit cards, which are only to be used to buy nutritious food for children and low-income families.

The baskets were priced between 60 and 90 dollars.

One of the stores selling the baskets was Food Depot on Northside Drive in Jackson.

There were other cases reported at stores in Yazoo City, Belzoni, Kosciusko, and Lexington.

"It's important that retailers understand that when they put these out and they entice people into buying these particular items like this that they are at risk of losing their ability to have EBT machines in their stores," said DHS spokesperson Julia Bryan.

Investigators obtained receipts from each valentine's basket purchase which showed they were being rung up as grocery, bakery and deli items.

DHS fraud investigators have already recovered over 25-thousand dollars in fraud items for the state so far this year.
