VICKSBURG, MS (WLBT) – A Vicksburg man was fatally shot overnight Saturday after witnesses said he argued with his killer. According to investigators, the gunman followed the victim from a night club then gunned him down as he tried to escape.

When gunfire erupted outside the Exxon Jubilee Station on Mission 66 in Vicksburg those shots would claim the life of Derek Stamps, 18. It was just before one o'clock Sunday morning.

Witnesses said earlier that Stamps was at Joanne's night club eight miles away in the Kings Community, where he and Dominic Rashad Turner, 18, argued.

"He took the other guy's girlfriend," said Jubilee convenience store owner George Shaibi.

According to Shaibi, his security guard witnessed the sudden shooting.

"They say they started gathering and he went out and cleared them out and then this guy came from nowhere and went to that guy's car and he run into his car and that's when he got killed," said Shaibi.

Turner reportedly tracked Stamps from the club to the store before firing the shots and fleeing.

"The shooter is in custody. He turned himself in this morning," said Vicksburg Police Dept. Sgt. Sandra Williams.

Vicksburg law officers launched a manhunt that led to Turner to surrender at police headquarters around 8:30 a.m. Sunday. He is charged with murder.

"When police arrived on scene we found one subject deceased in a vehicle on a parking lot. Mr. Stamps died from multiple gunshot wounds," said Sgt. Williams.

Those fatal wounds included a shot to the head.

The Warren Central High School graduate is the son of Vicksburg Fire Captain Derek Stamps Sr.

"He was a team player always," said Stamps' friend Jeremy Brown.

Stamps was also on the football team where he played line backer and running back.

"He was a good loving person. He was a friendly person, always cool with everybody, ain't had no problem with nobody, nothing like that," added Brown.

It is reported that Stamps and Turner knew each other.

Vicksburg police are continuing the investigation into events that allegedly led Turner to take Stamps' life.

Derek Stamps' fatal shooting is Vicksburg's first homicide of the year.
