Lawmaker want to simplify involuntary commitment process

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Mississippi lawmakers are trying to simplify the process of having people involuntarily committed for mental illness.

A bill that has passed the house and gone to the senate would set uniform standards in every county in the state.

House public health chairman Steve Holland says fees for filing commitment papers range from $120.00 in some counties to as high as $1,400.00 in others.

Lawmakers propose setting a $75.00 fee and requiring officials to develop a one-page commitment form that would be easy to understand.
