JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Some local students took a step back in time Friday.
Third graders at Northside Elementary in Pearl experienced what life was like in the old West.
They received demonstrations from a blacksmith, and learned line dancing moves from the Pearl High School dance team. Students also had the chance to visit a corral with live animals, and even got rides on a stage coach.
The day's activities were inspired by the book "Boom Town," which students read this past week.
"You get to experience what it was like back in the day," said third grader Cheyann Jimenez.
"That's part of our mission at Pearl, to create lifelong learners. And we felt that when students actually get to experience a settlement with different activities, they'll remember that for a very long time," said Nikki Smith, Northside Elementary principal.
This marks the second year Northside Elementary has replicated a old Western "boom town."
